In 1957, Manuel Blasco Monserrat founded the toy company "Blasco Monserrat" in Barcelona, Spain. The company used the brand name "EKO". This name was given because of a spectacular comet that was seen in the year 1957: Ex Kuiper Object. The first models had no plastic window inserts and consisted of two parts: body and chassis. The windows were painted silver or remained unpainted. The second release showed plastic window inserts and the VW Convertible Beetle received also a driver and a passenger. The third release ist best known among collectors carrying the brand name TOYEKO. In the early 1960's EKO bought the molds from ANGUPLAS and released the former ANGUPLAS models under the EKO brand name.
Plastic body with nice representation of a Volkswagen Convertible with the top down. Good details of front and rear hood, door seams and headlights. Sometimes there is a dab of paint on the headlights, taillights and rear license plate. A molded interior with driver and passenger and a folded down plastic top. Plastic chassis has molded the front and rear single blade bumpers with guard. Chassis has a raised center strengthening bar and the triangle EKO insignia. Plastic wheels with hubcaps and metal axles attach to the chassis which is then glued to the body. The EKO Cabrio comes with an optional camper and a plastic tow bar is glued under the rear bumper.
