ESTRELA was founded in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1937, by German immigrant Siegfried Adler. He acquired the remains of a bankrupt toy factory which produced rag dolls and wooden toys cars. This production initially was continued, but later, in the early 1950’s they started producing plastic and tinplate toys as well. A Sao Paulo based company named MIRIM, later renamed into ATMA Paulista, produced the plastic toy cars for ESTRELA.
Its logo is a four-pointed star, a sort of compass, referring to the Company name "ESTRELA" which means "star" in Portuguese. The Company still exists as producer, importer and distributor of major toy brands and is a major player in South America.
The body is made of soft plastic with cut out windows and has very good details of the Oval Window VW Sedan lines. Details include the front and rear hood, door seams and rear oval window with air louvers. There are also molded into the body headlights, taillights, front hood trim and handle. There is a plain tin insert for the interior. The tin chassis has a friction motor, rubber tires on metal rims and the metal bumpers attach to the chassis. The chassis is marked ESTRELA MARCA REGIS IND BRA. The body shape and size is similar to the PEPE JATO OVAL VW.
This ESTRALA Oval VW came in a very colorful box with the VW VOLKSWAGEN lettering and a side view of a family cruising along in the VW. Another scene on the box shows a VW Sedan coming out of a tunnel and is passed by another VW going in the opposite direction. The box has the ESTRELA logo and the number No.9035.
