In 1910, Hubert Kienberger founded HUKI, Kienberger & Co., Nürnberg, Germany. They mainly produced Penny Toys and animals on wheels. Before WW2, they used the brand name KiCo, which was later altered into HUKI. In 1943, the company was destroyed by a fire and only in 1951 production was restarted. HUKI ceased to exist in the second half of the seventies. HUKI always produced tin toys and did not change to plastic cars like many other manufacturers. This caused their downfall. They had developed new toy models until the late sixties; in their last decade (or less) they only produced from their old production tooling.
Very nice tinplate lithograph body representing a top up Convertible Volkswagen of the 1950s. Details include windows with people’s faces, taillights, headlights, engine louvers in the rear deck lid and convertible top. Tin plate chassis, rubber wheels mounted on a clockwerk motor, metal front wheels, and a center wheel for turning.
The HK-4005 early version has “faded look” color lithographed design with printed wheels. The later version has a bright red color lithographed design with printed fender skirts. License registration number HK-4005 on front bumper and rear deck lid is printed MADE IN WESTERN GEMANY.
Just to note: the metal dies used to make the HK-4005 VW Convertible body was also used to make the HUKI Split Window Volkswagen toys as well but they used a different lithograph design.
HK-4007 Version: Similar to the HK-4005 later version with a bright red color lithographed design with printed fender skirts. The HK-4007 has a rear split window instead of an oval window. License registration number HK-4007 in red lettering on front bumper and rear deck lid is printed MADE IN WESTERN GEMANY and a HK-4007 license plate as well. Seldom Found.
HK-4008 Version: Similar to the HK-4005 later version with a bright red color lithographed design with printed fender skirts. The roof is black with a white outline of a sun roof. There is a rear split window. License registration number HK-4008 in red lettering on front bumper and rear deck lid is printed MADE IN WESTERN GEMANY and a HK-4008 license plate as well. Seldom Found.
